Urim & Thummim (“the app”) is a scripture-reading and language-learning app. In plain terms: the app keeps your data on your device, does not track you, and shows no ads.
What we do NOT do
We do not require an account to read scripture or study vocabulary.
We do not collect analytics, use tracking or advertising SDKs, or profile you.
We do not sell or share your data with anyone.
We do not access your contacts, photos, location, or microphone.
Data stored only on your device
The following stay on your phone and are never sent anywhere:
Saved vocabulary — words you save while reading.
Study progress — spaced-repetition review state, streaks, and reading progress.
Settings — your reading/definition languages, theme, font, and reminder preferences.
Deleting the app removes this data.
Data you can choose to send
A few features send information off your device, and only when you actively use them:
Dictionary corrections. If you submit a correction for a word’s definition, the app sends that correction — the word, your suggested definition, the scripture reference, and the languages involved — to our database (hosted by Supabase) for review. Corrections are submitted anonymously; no account, name, or email is attached.
Feedback. If you use the in-app feedback form, what you send — the text you write, the app version and basic device info, an optional screenshot you attach, and an optional contact email you choose to provide — is stored in our database (Supabase) for the developer to review. Nothing beyond your message is required.
Reading circle (leaderboard). When you open the reading circle, the app creates a random nickname (which you can change) and uploads it along with your Light and level totals to our database (Supabase), so you can see how you compare with other readers each week. It is pseudonymous — no account, real name, email, or the content of what you read is attached. Your chosen nickname and point totals are visible to other readers.
Notifications
If you enable the daily reading reminder, it is scheduled locally on your device. No notification data is sent to us or any server.
Children’s privacy
The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because it requires no account and collects no personal data by default, it is suitable for all ages.
Data retention
On-device data lives until you delete it (or delete the app). Anonymous corrections you submit are retained to maintain the shared dictionary. Feedback is retained by the developer as ordinary correspondence. Your reading-circle entry (nickname and totals) is retained while you use the leaderboard; contact weston@hydeco.co to have it removed.
Third-party services
Supabase — our database/backend; stores anonymous dictionary corrections, in-app feedback, and the pseudonymous reading-circle leaderboard. (supabase.com/privacy)
Expo — used to deliver app updates. (expo.dev/privacy)
